Minecraft Banner Alphabet: A–Z Loom Letter Recipes
Java 1.21.11Make Minecraft banner letters with A–Z loom recipes, dye layers and texture-based previews. Check base colors, the six-layer limit and Java version scope.
Make letters with a banner, dye and loom
These A–Z recipes use at most six loom layers in Java 1.21.11. Start with the stated green or white banner, then add each dye and pattern in the listed order. B and D also need the Bordure Indented pattern item; craft it with Paper and a Vine.
Flat previews use the pinned Java 1.21.11 texture masks. Game lighting, cloth movement and placement are not shown. The recipes are checked for pattern identities and the six-layer limit; these previews do not claim an in-game build test or Bedrock compatibility.

Loom recipes
Need to identify a loom icon or obtain a special pattern item? Look up banner patterns. To build large letters out of blocks instead, build letters from blocks.
How do you make letters on Minecraft banners?
Make a letter by applying dye patterns to a banner in a loom, in the recipe's stated order. A banner letter is a decorated item; it is different from a large letter built out of blocks. Choose a letter above to see its starting banner color and every layer.
This guide targets Java 1.21.11. B and D require the Bordure Indented banner-pattern item (craft it with 1 Paper and 1 Vine); the other recipes use ordinary loom patterns. Each recipe has at most six added layers. The initial banner color is not a layer.
Prepare the banner and dyes
Start with a plain green or white banner, as specified for the letter. Use the same green and white dyes shown in the steps. Replacing a dye changes the result; applying the steps out of order can cover a stroke that should remain visible.
- Put the starting banner in the loom's banner slot.
- Add the dye named by the next step.
- Choose the named pattern and take the result.
- Return that result to the banner slot for the following step.
Green layers sometimes cover white areas to shape the letter. They are required steps, not empty background. The intermediate previews show the result after each layer.
Can you make these banner letters in Survival?
The listed recipes stay within the six-pattern limit in Java 1.21.11. B and D also require the Bordure Indented item. You still need the starting banner, loom and one dye for each step. The layer rules and texture composites are checked against the pinned version; this guide does not claim that every recipe was built in a running game.
If a letter looks wrong, first compare the base color, dye and step order. Then check the game version and resource pack. The previews show flat texture composites, so they do not reproduce cloth movement, lighting or every viewing angle.
Choose the right kind of lettering
Use banner letters for signs made from decorated banners. For freestanding names, wall lettering or block-by-block plans, use the Minecraft Letter Generator instead. It produces whole-block letters and material counts, rather than loom recipes.
For the complete pattern names and the separate items that unlock special patterns, look up Minecraft banner patterns. An alphabet recipe and a pattern-item acquisition guide answer different questions.
Sources and verification scope
- Mojang's loom introduction explains the banner, dye and pattern workflow.
- Java 1.21.11 ordinary-pattern data identifies patterns that do not need an unlocking item.
- The version's six-pattern limit bounds these recipes.
The diagrams are rendered from the site's pinned Minecraft texture masks, not copied game screenshots or generated illustrations. How We Test explains the distinction between source checks, browser verification and hands-on game testing. Report a recipe mismatch with the letter, version and step that differs.
